Palpebral Fissure: Meaning, Length and Eye Shape

Palpebral fissure means the opening between your eyelids. Learn how length, height and tilt are measured, what photos show and styling limits.

Palpebral Fissure: Meaning, Length and Eye Shape

The palpebral fissure is the opening framed by your upper and lower eyelids. Its horizontal length is the straight-line distance from the inner corner to the outer corner: L = √[(x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²]. The result is a raw distance in pixels, or millimetres only after proper calibration. Height is the gap between the eyelid margins, usually measured through the pupil centre.

This isn't the size of your eyeball or eye socket. It is the visible opening at one moment. Gaze, blink timing, lid position, head pose and camera setup can all move the result.

How to measure palpebral fissure length and height

Use a straight-on photo with a neutral expression and eyes looking at the lens. Keep the camera level, use the same distance each time and don't lift your brows. Record the convention you use before comparing two images.

The inner landmark is the endocanthion. The outer one is the exocanthion. Packiriswamy, Kumar and Rao used those endpoints in a 2012 study of 300 young adults. They measured height between the upper and lower lid margins through the pupil.

Names aren't fully consistent. Rana and colleagues called the corner-to-corner measure the horizontal palpebral aperture in their 2023 Australian study. Some protocols use the maximum vertical gap instead of the pupil-centred gap. Those methods can produce different numbers from the same eye.

Illustrative example: one synthetic image

Suppose the corners are 120 pixels apart horizontally, with the outer corner 6 pixels higher. The calculated length is √(120² + 6²), or 120.1 pixels. The tilt is arctan(6 / 120), or 2.9°. If the pupil-centred height is 40 pixels, the ratio is 40 / 120.1 = 0.333, or 33.3%.

These numbers are illustrative. They aren't a real person's measurements or a target. Without a scale in the same plane as the eyes, 120.1 pixels cannot become a trustworthy millimetre value.

Now move the upper lid mark down 2 pixels and the lower mark up 1 pixel. Height falls from 40 to 37 pixels. The ratio falls from 33.3% to 30.8%, a 7.5% relative change. A lash shadow, soft focus or different annotator could cause that shift without any physical change.

What a photo can and cannot show

A good front photo can show the visible lid contour, approximate length, height and corner angle. It can also document left-right differences in that image. It cannot reveal orbital bone dimensions, make a diagnosis or establish a permanent trait.

Eye direction matters. Read and colleagues photographed 76 young people in primary gaze and at two downward angles in 2006. Both horizontal and vertical openings changed with gaze. In the paper's White subgroup, mean height moved from 9.7 mm in primary gaze to 6.4 mm at 40° downward gaze.

Head pose matters too. Vaca and colleagues photographed 12 women from −15° to +15° of sagittal head tilt. Visible corner-height difference and several lid measurements changed across that range. The sample was small and female-only, but it shows why two casual selfies aren't a controlled comparison.

Distance is another source of error. Derakhshan and colleagues tested 12 people with smartphone and full-frame cameras in 2024. Short selfie distances produced 12% to 19% vertical stretching in measured midface features. That wasn't a palpebral-fissure validation, so don't apply those percentages as an eye correction. Use the finding as a reason to keep distance and camera constant.

Palpebral Fissure: Meaning, Length and Eye Shape

Almond, round and hooded describe different features

No single palpebral fissure number assigns an eye-shape label. Hall and colleagues' 2009 morphology terminology calls almond shape a subjective description based on the arcs of both lids. A ratio may help describe the outline, but it doesn't settle the label.

How common eye-area terms differ
TermWhat it describesWhat it does not mean
AlmondA tapered outline formed by the upper and lower lid curvesA fixed ratio or quality ranking
RoundAn outline that reads taller or shows more white around the irisA medical finding or universal threshold
HoodedHow upper-lid skin and the crease sit above the openingA specific fissure length or tilt
Canthal tiltThe corner-to-corner angle against a defined horizontalHeight, length or whole eye shape

You can have hooded, almond-shaped eyes because those words describe different layers. The placement guide for hooded eyes focuses on visible lid space. For the corner angle itself, read the separate guide to measuring canthal tilt.

The phrase “hunter eyes” bundles eyelid exposure, brow position, perceived depth and tilt into one internet label. It isn't another name for palpebral fissure length. Our hunter-eyes explainer separates those visible traits without ranking them.

What can safely change the appearance

Styling changes the frame, not the eyelid opening itself. Try one variable at a time, then compare photos taken with the same pose and light.

  • Makeup: To test a longer look, try an outward liner extension. For a taller look, place more lash emphasis near the centre. Both are styling effects, not anatomy.
  • Brows: Tail direction and the cleaned lower edge change the space above the eye. Avoid removing large sections just to chase a diagram.
  • Glasses: Rim thickness, lens shape and frame angle can emphasize or mask the corners. Photograph each option from the same distance.
  • Hair: A fringe or face-framing layer can shift attention toward or away from the eyes. It does not change the measurement.
  • Beard: Facial hair can rebalance the lower face, but it has no direct effect on the fissure.

Keep eye-area experiments simple. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises washing your hands, using clean tools and not sharing eye cosmetics. Choose products made for the eye area. Stop using a product if it irritates you. Don't apply eye cosmetics while the eye or nearby skin is inflamed.

There is no perfect palpebral fissure value

Population averages are reference data, not beauty targets. Rana and colleagues measured 760 eyes from 380 Australian adults in 2023. Several dimensions varied with age or sex, and the study's ethnic subgroups were uneven in size. The study did not test attractiveness or define an ideal. No value from it is a personal target.

If a measurement or eyelid change concerns you, ask a doctor or eye-care professional; a selfie cannot provide a clinical assessment.

For a practical next step, take one neutral, straight-on reference photo and use the face symmetry check as a photo-based comparison. Treat visible alignment as specific to that image. It cannot establish bone anatomy or a clinical measurement.
