Best AI Hairstyle Try-On Apps (2026): Do They Keep Your Face?

Disclosure: GlowUp Face publishes this page and sells the paid GlowUp Face report discussed below. We did not run the competing tools on a face.

The best AI hairstyle try on app depends on whether you value face fidelity, choice or live tools. GlowUp Face has the clearest published face-preservation method here. It reuses your facial pixels after generation when alignment works. YouCam offers the widest stated catalogue, while MyEdit adds flexible inputs and LightX offers daily free credits.

This is a desk comparison of current official product pages, not a hands-on image-quality test. A company saying a style appears “on your face” describes the input. It does not prove that every facial feature survives the render unchanged.

Does the render keep your face?

A result shown on your own photo can still redraw your face. Generative try-ons can create new pixels around the hair, forehead and face boundary. That process can also change eyes, nose shape, jaw width or skin texture.

Nikolaev, Kuznetsov, Vetrov and Alanov described hairstyle transfer as a difficult reconstruction problem in NeurIPS 2024. Their HairFastGAN paper highlights pose mismatch, hairstyle sensitivity and the lack of settled objective metrics. Their system used dedicated encoders and inpainting for alignment, colour transfer and reconstruction. Identity preservation is an engineering choice, not a default result.

The paper did not test these four consumer tools, so it cannot tell you which one drifts least.

GlowUp Face takes a disclosed compositing approach. It generates the haircut, then pastes the original brows-to-chin region back when it can align the face. That reduces redraw inside the region, but it is not a measured accuracy score. The forehead, hairline and surrounding area still come from the generated result, and a panel that fails alignment remains model-drawn.

The other three pages describe mapping or generating hair on your photo. None of the pages checked explains whether the final face uses original pixels. That does not mean those tools change your face. It means their published pages do not let you verify the method.

A 60-second face-drift check

This is an editorial check, not a validated research protocol. It helps you reject a misleading preview before you judge the haircut.

  1. Place the original and result at the same size. Compare the original with each render, not one render with another.
  2. Cover the hair with your hand or crop it out. Check eye spacing and eyelid shape first.
  3. Compare the nose tip and nostril width, then the jaw corners and chin. These shapes change how a cut frames the face.
  4. Check skin texture, moles, smile lines and under-eye shadows. Sudden smoothing is evidence that more than the hair changed.
  5. Reject any panel where a changed facial feature affects your preference. Keep the image only as a loose hair reference.

Illustrative example

You generate two blunt bobs from the same selfie, and the first narrows your jaw and removes a cheek mole. Mark that result as face drift and do not use it to choose the bob. In the second, your eyes, nose, jaw and skin marks match, but the fringe sits too low. Keep that image and tell the stylist: blunt jaw-length bob, centre part, fringe ending at the brows, not the lashes.

A clean input makes this comparison easier. The photo guide for hairstyle try-ons explains how to control angle, light and framing before you spend credits.

Where the other tools are stronger

YouCam is stronger when choice matters more than a fixed face-compositing method. Its browser tool lists 200+ hairstyles, while GlowUp Face’s free tool chooses three. YouCam also accepts a reference cut. Its separate YouCam Makeup product lists 150+ hair colours and live-camera colour preview on iOS and Android.

MyEdit is stronger for a precise creative brief. You can choose from 70+ presets, write a prompt or upload one reference hairstyle. It also supports colour changes. Pick it when you already have a saved cut and want the tool to copy that direction.

LightX is stronger for repeated free experiments. Its page offers five daily AI credits after sign-up, custom prompts, colour requests and 1024-pixel downloads. The page does not say how many hairstyle renders those credits buy.

GlowUp Face is the wrong choice if you want to browse hundreds of cuts or choose every free style yourself. It also cannot preview colour on a live camera. It is a web page, so there is no offline use, app icon or push notification.

The free try-on needs an email. One paid purchase covers one report, with no built-in progress timeline or repeated tracking. It will never give you an attractiveness number to compare with friends.

Which one should you pick?

  • Pick GlowUp Face if face consistency and quick outside opinions matter most. Its free hairstyle try-on makes three previews and one private voting link. The link and images delete after 24 hours.
  • Pick YouCam if you want the largest stated catalogue here, reference-photo input, many colour options or live-camera colour preview.
  • Pick MyEdit if you want to describe a cut in words or copy a specific reference photo.
  • Pick LightX if daily free credits and prompt-led experiments matter more than a disclosed face-lock method.

If photo retention decides the purchase, vague privacy wording should count against a tool. Read the current policy instead of relying on the upload-screen slogan. Our guide to face-photo safety in beauty apps shows what deletion, training and third-party processing terms to check. GlowUp Face’s own route-specific details are in its face-data privacy page.

The paid GlowUp Face report only makes sense if you also want its skin readings, six hairstyle panels and 30-day plan. If you only want haircut ideas, use the free tool instead.

Take a preview to the salon, not a verdict

A render can compare outline, fringe, part, length and volume. It cannot show how your real density, curl pattern, growth direction or damaged ends will behave after a cut. The accuracy guide for AI hairstyle try-ons explains those limits in detail.

Bring the least distorted image and a short brief. State what to keep, what to change, your maximum styling time and whether colour is part of the plan. Ask the stylist which parts are feasible with your current hair. That turns an AI image into a useful conversation rather than a promise.
