Does Face Taping Work for Wrinkles? What Evidence Shows

Does face taping work for wrinkles? It can flatten some lines for minutes or hours after you remove it. Human studies haven't shown lasting wrinkle reduction, wrinkle prevention, collagen remodeling, or permanent muscle “retraining.” If you want a short-lived smoothing effect and tolerate adhesive, tape may offer that, but it is a weak long-term wrinkle plan.

What face tape actually does

Face tape holds the skin in a fixed position, so a wrinkle may look shallower after that pressure. Normal facial movement returns when the tape comes off.

That distinction matters because smoothing a folded surface is not the same as rebuilding collagen or changing the muscle beneath it. A pulling strip near the hairline can lift skin while tension remains, but it does not show that tissue has tightened.

Expression lines appear or deepen when you smile, squint, or frown, while resting lines remain when your face relaxes. Tape can restrict a fold while you wear it, but the studies do not show permanent changes in either process.

Does face taping work for wrinkles?

The best direct studies point to a brief cosmetic effect, not lasting treatment.

William Ryan and Sam Most followed 30 healthy volunteers in 2009, who wore forehead and frown-line pads for four weeks. Twenty-six finished the study, averaging 7.4 hours of wear each night.

Two facial plastic surgeons scored matched photographs without knowing which images came first, and neither found a statistically significant improvement. Participants rated their own frown lines slightly better, but the authors warned that self-rating could be biased.

Vittorio Mazzarello and colleagues tested crow's-feet pads in 39 people in 2018, and one 30-minute application reduced measured surface roughness. After nightly use for four weeks, that change lasted up to 60 minutes, while participants thought it could last about two hours.

The same study found no statistically significant change in skin elasticity. That result narrows the claim: the pad temporarily flattened visible texture without making skin measurably more elastic.

A 2025 study by Young-sam Yuk and Hyoung-won Lim tested kinesiology tape for four weeks in 10 older women. Their elasticity measure changed significantly at the right nasolabial fold, but not across every site or measure. There was no comparison group or evidence showing what remained after participants stopped taping.

These studies used different pads, facial areas, and measurements, and all were small. None proves that nightly face taping prevents future wrinkles, rebuilds skin, or produces a lasting lift.

Match the claim to the evidence

This table is an editorial decision guide, not a medical test. It separates a result you can reasonably expect from one the studies have not established.

What face tape can and cannot do
Your goalWhat the evidence supportsUseful next stepMain limit
Smooth crow's feet before an eventA pad may briefly reduce visible surface roughness after removal.Test it on an ordinary day first, then compare at 15 and 60 minutes. The effect may fade within hours and may not be visible on your skin.
Prevent new wrinklesNo face-taping study has shown prevention over months or years.Prioritize daily sun protection. Our guide explains the evidence on sunscreen and skin aging.A four-week tape study cannot answer a long-term prevention question.
Reduce forehead or frown lines over timeBlinded reviewers found no statistically significant improvement in photographs after four weeks.Review the evidence and irritation tradeoffs in our beginner retinol guide.A topical routine takes time and cannot erase every line.
Lift cheeks or sharpen the jawlineThe wrinkle-pad studies did not establish a lasting lift or contour change.Treat a visible pull as temporary styling. For under-chin fullness, use the double-chin options guide.Tape has not been shown to remove fat, tighten tissue permanently, or reshape bone.
Retrain facial musclesNo cited study measured a lasting change in muscle activity after tape removal.Do not use post-removal tightness as proof that a muscle changed.A sensation is not a measure of muscle behavior.

Nightly adhesive has a skin cost

Tape is not biologically neutral because each removal can take outer skin cells with it, especially after repeated use.

Fumio Tokumura and colleagues tested repeated applications of two adhesive strengths on six people's forearms. They measured more disruption to surface texture and more water loss as removed skin cells accumulated. The stronger tape caused larger changes.

That 2005 experiment was tiny and did not test faces or wrinkle patches, so it cannot estimate your chance of irritation. It does explain why a nightly peel-and-reapply habit can leave skin sore even when the first use feels fine.

If you still want to try it

  1. Use a product labeled for facial skin, not household or heavy-duty tape. Follow its wear and removal instructions.
  2. Patch test as the label directs. Make the first facial trial short and daytime, not a full night.
  3. Keep tape off mobile eyelids, lashes, broken skin, sunburn, active rashes, and inflamed spots.
  4. Do not test a new acid or retinoid under the tape. Otherwise, a reaction becomes harder to trace.
  5. Remove it slowly while supporting the skin. Stop if you get pain, burning, lasting redness, swelling, or blisters.

If irritation persists after removal, leave the area alone and use a plain routine. The damaged skin barrier guide explains which signs call for professional care.

Put long-term effort where the evidence is stronger

Sun protection has a much stronger prevention study than face tape. Maria Celia Hughes and colleagues followed 903 adults under 55 in a randomized Australian trial. After 4.5 years, the daily sunscreen group had 24% less progression in measured skin aging than the discretionary-use group.

That trial tested prevention and measured group averages, so it cannot predict one person's result or promise overnight wrinkle removal. Still, it answers the long-term question that face-taping studies have not.

If you want a smoother look for one event, a facial patch may be a reasonable experiment if your skin stays calm. If your goal spans years, spend the effort on sun protection and a routine you can tolerate. Tape is optional, and harder pulling does not turn a temporary effect into skin remodeling.
