The jaw you see under stubble
An oblong face is clearly longer than it is wide, with fairly straight sides. Your jaw is about as wide as your cheeks. With short stubble, you can still trace much the same line from your cheek to the corner of your jaw.
If you're unsure how those widths compare, the free face-shape finder reads jaw-to-cheekbone width from one selfie on your device.
What to ask for in the barber's chair
Ask for the look of two to five days of growth, kept at one short length. If you're coming in with a longer beard, say, “I'd like even stubble, including under my chin.” That tells your barber to take off the extra length at the front as well as along the jaw.
If your aim is a wider-looking jaw, a full beard with fuller sides gives you room to shape it that way. Even stubble leaves little hair to build out the sides.
How often to run the trimmer over it
Make a trimmer pass every two to three days, using the same setting across your cheeks, jaw and chin. The days of growth describe the look you're keeping. You don't need to shave clean and start growing it back each time.
If you decide to grow the stubble into a beard, set the cheek and neck lines from week two. Waiting for the whole beard to grow in before shaping the edges is the common mistake here.
Questions people ask
- Will stubble make a long chin look shorter?
- It changes the outline too little to shorten a long chin. If you want facial hair and you're happy with the length your chin already has, even stubble suits that aim.
- How can I make my face look shorter while keeping stubble?
- A fringe covers part of the forehead, and a haircut with width at the sides helps balance the length. Height on top or long, straight hair at the sides makes the outline look longer.
