The best acne analysis app depends on the job. Choose Spotscan+ for a free 0–5 acne grade and lesion categories. Choose AcneTrack for repeated app-based tracking. SkinPal AI suits broader skin metrics. GlowUp Face is a browser option without a subscription, but it has no built-in progress timeline.
Four photo-based acne tools compared
| Attribute | GlowUp Face | Spotscan+ |
|---|---|---|
| Acne output | Localises visible inflammatory and surface spots by facial zone. The wider report also maps redness, oiliness and pigmentation. It does not label a medical acne type. | Counts, localises and categorises spots, blackheads and pigmented marks from front, left and right selfies. |
| Score or rating | No clinical acne grade or attractiveness rating. The paid report has a Photo-Ready Score, which summarises photo-visible signals and is not a beauty rank. | Gives a Global Evaluation of Acne grade from 0 to 5. No attractiveness rating is described. |
| Free and paid | A selected preview is free. The full report is one payment for one report, with no subscription. | Free. No paid tier is stated publicly. The result recommends La Roche-Posay products. |
| Platform | Browser only. There is no iOS or Android app, offline use or push notification. | Runs on a smartphone through the brand page or its QR code. No installed app is required. |
| Progress tracking | No history, streaks or automatic timeline. You must compare matched photos and saved outputs yourself. | Not stated publicly on the product page. |
| Photo handling | Analysis runs on the server. Paid results remain private for up to 72 hours by default. A source scan may be archived privately and needs manual deletion. Uploads do not enter GlowUp Face's own training data. | L’Oréal says selfies are deleted from its server immediately after the analysis. |
| Attribute | SkinPal AI | AcneTrack |

Checked on 21 October 2026 on L’Oréal’s Spotscan+ page, SkinPal AI’s App Store listing, and AcneTrack’s own site and App Store listing. This is a desk comparison, not a hands-on test. Apple says those privacy labels come from the developers and are not independently verified. Prices and plans change, so check the current listing before paying.
What an acne photo analysis can show
A focused selfie can show visible surface features. These include inflamed spots, some blackheads and whiteheads, and where breakouts cluster. It can also show redness and flat red or brown marks left after older spots.
That distinction matters. A flat mark can remain after the active spot has healed. A tool that counts every coloured dot as active acne will overstate the current breakout. Spotscan+ explicitly separates pigmented marks from spots and blackheads. The other tools report broader scores or candidate maps, so inspect the overlay rather than trusting one number.
Location is useful for tracking, not for proving a cause. Jawline clusters do not confirm hormonal acne. Forehead spots do not prove a hair product caused them. A photo contains no cycle history, product history, symptoms or lab data.
What a selfie cannot establish
A normal phone image cannot reliably show how deep or tender a lump is. Deep nodules and cysts may be felt more clearly than they are seen. A photo also cannot diagnose acne, identify its cause or rule out rosacea, folliculitis and other lookalikes.
It cannot prove that a treatment is working from one before-and-after pair. Lighting changes redness, shine, shadow and the edge of each spot. Camera sharpening can make texture look harsher. Makeup and smoothing can hide it. Our guide to AI skin-analysis accuracy explains why repeatability is different from medical accuracy.
What automated acne-grading research found
Li and colleagues tested an automated grading system on images from 1,501 acne patients in 2023. Dermatologists supplied the reference labels. Adding lesion information raised agreement with those labels to a weighted kappa of 0.737, reported in Frontiers in Medicine.
That result is promising, but the test was easier than everyday use. The team used standardised clinic images rather than uncontrolled selfies. All patients were Chinese and had Fitzpatrick skin types II to IV. The authors said real-world validation was still needed.
The study does not validate any app in this roundup. It shows that automated grading can approach useful agreement under controlled conditions. It also shows why a consumer score needs limits, clear photo rules and testing beyond one clinic group.

Illustrative example: is the change real?
Suppose your first scan maps 22 visible spot candidates. A second scan three days later maps 14. That looks better, but the second photo was taken beside a window instead of under a ceiling light.
- Retake the photo in the first location, with the same camera, distance and angle.
- Compare the overlays. Check whether the same cheek and forehead spots disappeared, rather than only the score moving.
- Separate raised or inflamed spots from flat marks. Marks can remain while active acne settles.
- Look for a direction across several matched photos. Counts of 22, 18 and 15 over several weeks carry more weight than one jump.
Even that pattern does not prove a product caused the change. Spots heal naturally, and stress, menstrual cycles, picking and routine changes may coincide. Use the record to ask a better question, not to declare a cause.
Where the other tools are stronger
Spotscan+ is stronger than GlowUp Face when you want a free, named acne grade. It categorises spots, blackheads and pigmented marks, then returns a 0–5 GEA grade. L’Oréal also says it deletes each selfie immediately after analysis.
AcneTrack is stronger for a habit loop. It keeps daily photos, compares scans and charts the score in its Evolution view. SkinPal AI also includes side-by-side comparisons and seven days of history, with longer history available through Premium.
GlowUp Face does none of that automatically. It is a web page, not an installed app. There are no reminders, streaks, offline use or progress feed. One payment buys one report. It is also the wrong choice if you want an attractiveness number to compare with friends.
Which acne analysis app should you choose?
- Choose Spotscan+ for a quick, free acne grade and separate categories for spots, blackheads and marks.
- Choose AcneTrack if repeated photos and a daily routine matter more than avoiding a subscription.
- Choose SkinPal AI if you want acne beside broader readings such as redness, oiliness and texture, and you use iOS.
- Choose the GlowUp Face acne scan for a one-off browser map and a wider report without recurring charges. Skip it if you need automatic tracking.
Choose none of them for a diagnosis. A useful app organises visible evidence. It does not replace an examination.
When an app is the wrong next step
See a dermatologist or GP if acne is causing scars, or you have deep, painful nodules or cysts. Get help sooner for hot, rapidly worsening skin or signs of infection. Do not wait for a score to confirm that something hurts.
The American Academy of Dermatology says improvement may start after four to six weeks, while clearing can take two to three months or longer. If consistent non-prescription care has not changed your acne after a few months, book professional advice. Our guide to how long acne treatment takes can help you judge the timeline without overreading daily photos.
