Start with the exact name
Retinoid is an umbrella term; retinol is one member of that family. The AAD discusses retinoids for acne, pigmentation and signs of aging, with product choice depending on the concern. Do not translate a percentage of one retinoid into an equivalent percentage of another. AAD: Retinoid or retinol?.
More actives do not guarantee more progress
Enter exfoliating toners, peels and scrubs along with your retinoid. A routine that contains several deserves a closer look for irritation. A prescribed combination is a different situation from separately buying products and stacking them; ask your prescriber about changes. AAD: How to safely exfoliate at home.
An evening step, with instructions attached
For cosmetic retinol, follow the product’s introduction schedule. Keep a moisturizer and daytime sun protection in the picture. The suggested order in our checker is an organizational starting point; it cannot know whether your particular retinoid has special application instructions.
Pregnancy changes the decision
Topical retinoids are not suitable during pregnancy according to NHS guidance. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, do not start a retinoid and discuss your current products with your clinician. If breastfeeding or using prescribed treatment, get advice specific to that product. NHS: Acne treatment.
A couple of common questions
Does more peeling mean retinol is working better?
Peeling is not a progress score. Persistent irritation is a reason to reassess a cosmetic routine and seek advice, not a target to chase.
Do I need a retinol serum and a retinol cream?
Not by default. Check whether both products contain retinoids before duplicating the step.
