Tongue posture doesn't establish bone growth
The claim behind mewing goes beyond where you rest your tongue. It proposes that this posture changes the adult jaw and midface. There is no evidence for that bone-moving effect.
Lee, Graves and Friedlander discuss the topic in "Mewing: Social Media's Alternative to Orthognathic Surgery?". Normal tongue posture doesn't, by itself, support the claim that you can reshape adult facial bone. Keep the posture and the promised result separate when you assess mewing advice.
Why a selfie can't measure mewing
A selfie shows your appearance at a moment in time. It cannot establish that tongue posture has moved your bones or explain what caused the features you see.
The free face-symmetry scan reads landmark distances from one selfie. It reports left-right differences and basic ratios, naming what it measured. Those measurements describe the image. They don't measure mewing, prove a bone change or establish that a tongue-posture routine works.
A forum label isn't a finding
The common mistake is treating a forum label as evidence about your face. A caption saying forward growth doesn't establish that adult bone has moved.
You may also encounter the related terms maxilla, orthotropics and bone smashing. Their connection to the discussion doesn't make them interchangeable or transfer evidence between them. Use the glossary to check what each term means before accepting the claim attached to it.
What to do with a mewing claim
Don't build an appearance plan around an unsupported promise to move adult bone. If a post recommends mewing for jaw reshaping, ask what evidence supports that specific result.
Keep the claimed outcome precise. Resting your tongue against your palate and changing the shape of your adult jaw are different propositions. A description of tongue position answers how the practice is defined. It doesn't answer whether the promised change happens.
Questions people ask
- Is normal tongue posture the same as proven jaw reshaping?
- No. Tongue posture is normal, but there is no evidence that mewing moves adult bone. The resting position doesn't prove the claimed result.
- Can a face-symmetry result prove that mewing worked?
- No. Landmark distances and ratios describe the photographed face. They don't establish that tongue posture caused a change.
- Does mewing mean the same thing as forward growth?
- Mewing names the tongue-posture practice. Forward growth is a related term, but using it in a caption doesn't establish that bone has moved.
